These clients wanted to take their old and dated master bathroom and turn it into an extravagant escape from there on the go lifestyle. They desired a bathroom that truly gave equal emphasis to his and her design, and left each half of this couple able to enjoy a spa-like experience anytime they stepped into the room.
Desiring a bathroom that provided enough space that they could both enjoy to the fullest, whether they were getting ready for the day together or separately, the room needed to better reflect their taste and style, make smarter use of the available storage space, and be finished in a luxurious style.
While the previous layout did provide a dual vanity for the couple, the sinks were located side by side and left them stepping on each other’s toes when getting ready. To remedy this issue, a large custom painted maple vanity with a tower cabinet was installed. This divided the vanity into two proper his and her spaces. The custom vanity added additional storage space that the clients needed through the counter to ceiling double-doored cabinet and the additional storage cabinets and drawers in the lower portion of the vanity.
Each vanity area is a mirror image of the other with matching sconce lighting, Kohler faucets, and adjustable mirrors. The vanity is topped with a light Cambria countertop. The color was specifically chosen to continue the peaceful aesthetics of the bathroom, and also provide texture and pattern to the space. A mosaic tile backsplash was added to the vanity areas and also continued in a chair rail design throughout the bathroom, a stylistic design intended to carry the eye throughout the space. The backsplash also works to tie the vanity, toilet, and tub area together as one cohesive space.
The previous linoleum flooring was dated and worn out, it was replaced with a traditional hexagon ceramic tile design in a neutral light color palette. The floor’s color scheme was chosen to flow into the marble plank tile of the wall, making the room seem larger and flow together seamlessly. The addition of heat to the flooring furthers emphasizes the relaxation of the ensuite.
The mosaic tile black splash is continued throughout the bathroom, in a chair rail design, this not only provides a decorative glass top the wall tile but also connects the vanity with the rest of the room. The change in tile size and material adds texture and contrast to the wall tiling. The decorative tile is repeated in the walk-in shower as well to further create a sense of continuity.
Because the shower was designed with a glass wall feel, the homeowners didn’t want their space or view to be hindered by a clunky in-swing door, nor did they want a door to open impractically into their bedroom. To solve this special issue a new 6 paneled pine pocket door was installed. To keep the door cohesive to both the master bedroom and the ensuite, the bathroom side of the door was painted white to coordinate with the custom cabinetry while the exterior of the door was stained to match the existing woodwork. This ensured that no matter which room you were in, the rooms were kept cohesive.
One aspect of their previous bathroom design that both homeowner’s loved, was the equal emphasis on the separate and spacious shower and bath areas. Since each of the clients gravitated towards the opposite area, both of them wanted to be assured they would have a unique spa experience.
The walk-in shower delivers on that spa experience, and then some! To maintain continuity with the rest of the bathroom, the main marble plank tiles of the bathroom are repeated here as well. The mosaic glass chair rail design is continued at eye level, not only tying the shower and bathroom areas together but also providing a break between the plank wall tiles and the smoked glass subway tiles on the upper wall portion and ceiling of the shower.
The shower itself was built to be a decadent experience with relaxation being the name of the game! A custom audio speaker and sound system were installed throughout the bathroom, including in the shower. A touch module control panel inside the shower not only controls the speakers but also the optimal shower level experience. To create the ultimate shower experience one can choose from the wall-mounted large faced shower head, ceiling rain shower head, three circular body sprays, or handheld showerhead. Floor to ceiling glass was installed in a three-piece system including the glass door, glass wall, and transom window across the top to ensure a tight seal when choosing to enjoy the sauna steam feature. The shower and entire bathroom are finished with chrome Kohler fixtures.
The old tiled whirlpool tub was removed and in its place, a free-standing Kohler whirlpool soaker tub was installed to allow these homeowners to relax in extreme comfort and style. The freestanding tub angles in the tiled alcove and also offers an external handheld shower head option. The alcove also has its own speakers and touch control pad for the optimal relaxing experience.
That’s not all this bathing area has to offer… not to be outdone in the lavish spa experience, this freestanding soaking tub has a very unique feature. The self-filling tub fills from the ceiling! This unique overhead tub filling option, not only emphasizes the luxury of the space but also repeats the rainfall design of the walk-in shower; further tying the distinct areas cohesively together into one flowing en-suite.
Due to the lavish amenities this bathroom has to offer, an area of the adjacent walk-in closet was repurposed to house the mechanicals that make the extras of this master en-suite function. This repurposing of space was used to house the steam shower’s generator, body spray controls as well as the overhead tub fill option, and the audio system controls.
This client’s desired a high end, luxurious space that they could call their own. They wanted this “adults only” space to be reminiscent of the serenity and relaxation they found when going to a spa, but with the convenience of being home. This spa environment was created by using calming color palettes, custom white cabinetry, and a built-in sound system. Complete relaxation can be found in the multi-directional steam shower or in the waterfall filling, freestanding soaking bathtub. Since both areas were equally important to the clients, each was equipped to function as the focal point of the ensuite, and make whoever was in it feel the epitome of relaxation.
